Never in our careers have we seen such a project galvanize and unite so many people! Starting with our own Board of Directors, who saw the critical need for such an institution, and our pediatric caregivers, whose passion and advocacy for the project served as catalysts that helped ignite the excitement for it in the broader community, the Hospital became a rallying point for West Virginians everywhere and a beacon of hope for the families who depend on us for care. WVU Medicine Children's Hospital is one of just 25 pediatric hospitals in the United States that is attached to a larger academic medical center, in this case J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVU Medicine's flagship hospital. They are a potent dyad that works to solve the most complex and challenging medical problems. What excites us most is what our patients will find inside the new Hospital a significantly larger care team that includes dozens of new pediatric specialists and subspecialists in a variety of disciplines, from pediatric cardiac surgery to pediatric neurological surgery: a best-in-class pediatric emergency department; a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit; and a world-class birthing center supported by an exceptionally talented team of providers who can handle the most routine and the most complex pregnancies. Of course, there are many more services - too many to list-but they will all share a common purpose: to care for our children and to make them healthy and whole.
